Requesting an Absentee Ballot

Who can vote via absentee ballot? Any registered voter can vote by mail in New Jersey. No excuse is required.

Absentee Ballot Request Deadline: Mail-in ballot applications by mail must be received by Oct. 27. In-person applications are accepted until 3:00 PM on Nov. 2.

How to request an absentee ballot:

In-Person: You can visit your County Clerk until 3:00 PM on Nov. 2 to request a ballot.

Voting & Returning an Absentee Ballot

When are ballots first mailed out? Sept. 19

How to return an absentee ballot:

By Mail: Follow the instructions provided with your absentee ballot materials.
In-Person: Return your ballot to your county board of elections by 8:00 PM on Election Day. Mail-in ballots cannot be returned to your polling place.
At a Ballot Drop Box: Drop boxes are available 24 hours a day until 8:00 PM on Election Day. Click here to find drop boxes in your county.

Deadline to Return an Absentee Ballot: 8:00 PM on Nov. 3

Mailed ballots must be postmarked by 8:00 PM on Election Day and received by Nov. 9. Ballots returned in-person or to a drop box must be delivered by 8:00 PM on Election Day.

**If you are mailing back your absentee ballot after you’ve completed and signed it, it is recommended that you allow at least a week for it to be received.**
